COLOMBO, Oct 26: The All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulema (ACJU) and a Muslim minister, have appealed to Sri Lankan Muslims not to offer Qurbani during Eidul Adha on Oct 29, but do it on alternative day, so that the laws of the country are not broken, and the feelings of the majority Buddhist community are not hurt.

In their appeal, the ACJU and Technology Minister Faizer Musthapha said that Muslims should avoid offering animal sacrifice on Oct 29, as it coincided with Poya, a day on which Sri Lanka’s Buddhist majority did not kill animals, consume or sell meat. As per the law, all meat shops are shut on Poya (full moon) days.

The ACJU said Muslims should respect the feelings of the followers of other religions. Minister Musthapha said that he had met the Lankan police chief, N. K. Illangakone, and offered his good offices to sort out any problems that might arise during Eidul Azha.
