LAHORE, Oct 8: The Lahore High Court chief justice on Monday directed the Punjab Inspector General (Prisons) to allow meeting of an Indian prisoner, Sarabjit Singh, with his counsel at Kot Lakhpat jail.

Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial passed the order while disposing of a petition moved by Advocate Awais Sheikh against the Punjab home secretary and Prisons IG.

Advocate Sheikh pleaded that he was disallowed to visit his client imprisoned in Kot Lakhpat jail. He said the act of the jail authorities was in violation of fundamental rights of a person.

On court’s direction, the IG (Prisons) submitted his reply and stated that all petitions and mercy appeal of Singh had been dismissed and no case was pending with any court in Pakistan.

Therefore, there was no need to allow the Indian convict to meet with any lawyer, he added.

The chief justice, however, directed the IG to give petitioner-lawyer one-time permission to meet his client.

Sarabjit Singh was an Indian spy and presently on death row on charges of carrying out two bomb blasts in Lahore and Multan. At least 14 Pakistani were killed in the blasts.
