LONDON, Sept 30: European giants Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Paris Saint Germain all grabbed victories in their respective domestic leagues ahead of their midweek Champions League assignments on Saturday.
Substitute David Villa scored a superb last-gasp winner and Cesc Fabregas netted twice as leaders Barcelona came from two goals down to stun 10-man Sevilla 3-2 and extend their perfect La Liga record to six matches.
Barca, who face Portuguese side Benfica in Champions League Group ‘G’ on Tuesday, were perilously close to slipping up for the first time this season when Sevilla went 2-0 up at their Sanchez Pizjuan stadium through Piotr Trochowski and Alvaro Negredo.
But Fabregas reduced the arrears after 53 minutes and Sevilla had midfielder Gary Medel was shown a direct red for head-butting Fabregas in the 72nd.
Barca pressed forward and it was Fabregras who equalised with a minute to go before Villa took Lionel Messi’s pass, used one touch to open space and fired home to claim the win.
Barca are four points ahead of second-placed Malaga who maintained their unbeaten start when they cruised to a 4-0 victory over Real Betis. Valencia, who host Lille in Champions League Group ‘F’ on Tuesday, climbed to seventh with eight points from six games after they beat Zaragoza 2-0 for a much-needed second win.
Bundesliga leaders Bayern, like Barca, also extended their perfect start to the season to six wins in six matches with a 2-0 victory at Werder Bremen.
Bayern, who on Tuesday face BATE Borisov in the Champions League, scored their goals in the final nine minutes after Luiz Gustavo curled an effort inside the left post in the 81st and Mario Mandzukic sealed victory with his sixth goal two minutes later.
Champions Borussia Dortmund, who play Manchester City in the Champions League, enjoyed a 5-0 romp over Borussia Moenchengladbach and two goals from Marco Reus for their first win in three games to move up to third on 11 points.
Serie A champions Juventus, who host Shakhtar Donetsk for their first Champions League home match in three years, pulled away from Napoli at the top of the table in Italy with a 4-1 thrashing of Roma which took them to 16 points.
Midfield maestro Andrea Pirlo gave Juve the lead with an expertly placed free kick in the 11th minute at Juventus Stadium, Arturo Vidal converted a penalty in the 16th and Alessandro Matri added another in the 19th with a deft finish past Maarten Stekelenburg.
Pablo Osvaldo pulled one back for Roma with a penalty in the 69th and Sebastian Giovinco restored Juve’s three-goal lead in the 90th.
Meanwhile, AC Milan’s poor start to the season continued as they produced a patchy performance in a 1-1 draw at Parma.
Milan, who visit Zenit St Petersburg on Wednesday, took the lead when Stephen El Shaarawy scored in the 50th but Daniele Galloppa equalised in the 66th with a free-kick that passed through a porous Milan wall on a rainy night at the Ennio Tardini stadium.
Elsewhere, PSG geared up for a testing week with a comfortable 2-0 win at home to Sochaux that propelled them to second place in the Ligue 1 table.
Kevin Gameiro’s first-half brace at Parc des Princes gave PSG their fifth consecutive win in all competitions, ahead of Wednesday’s visit to Porto in the Champions League and next weekend’s trip to league leaders Marseille.—Agencies
