LAHORE, Sept 29: Idris Haider Khawaja and Chaudhry Kamran Amin were elected as president and secretary general of the Pakistan Cycling Federation (PCF) respectively on Saturday as new posts of patron and chairman were also introduced in the federation.

The elections were held at a local hotel here on Saturday and except Pakistan Army and the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) all other affiliated units of the federation took part in the elections.

Before the elections, the general body approved the proposal to introduce new posts of chairman and patron.

While Syed Shahid Ali was elected as the patron, Nauraiz Shakoor, who was PCF president, has been elevated as chairman. Idris has progressed from the position of secretary to president. The elections were held on the recommendations of the Mohammad Shafiq-headed POA arbitration committee, which declared the previous elections held on Sept 24, 2011 as null and void.

In result of those elections Munawwar Baseer had been declared as winner. But Nauraiz’s group did not accept the results, and moved an application before the POA for arbitration. After one year, the arbitration committee declared last year’s elections as unconstitutional and asked for fresh elections. POA’s representative Mohammad Jahangir of the Pakistan Karate Federation (PKF) attended the elections meeting.

During this one-year time, the cyclists suffered a lot while the two warring groups remained locked in wrangling.

Meanwhile, the general body also approved the calendar of activities, according to which the first Cycling Track Championship for men and women will be held from Oct 19 to 21. The 60th National Cycling Championship (men) has been allotted to Wapda and dates will be decided later. The fifth Junior Men National Cycling Championships will be held in the second week of February 2013. The 17th International Tour de Pakistan cycle race will be held from Peshawar to Karachi from March 4 to 16, 2013. The 11th National Women Cycling Championship will be staged from April 9 to 13, 2013.

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) was also given playing rights by the general body.
