Justice Rehman named for SC

Published September 27, 2012

ISLAMABAD, Sept 27: The Judicial Commission of Pakistan recommended on Thursday that Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman be elevated to the Supreme Court.

The commission, headed by Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, also proposed the name of Justice Mohammad Anwar Khan Kasi for appointment as IHC chief justice.

Sources said that three members of the commission, Law Minister Farooq H. Naek, Attorney General Irfan Qadir and Pakistan Bar Council’s representative Dr Khalid Ranjha, objected to the nomination of Justice Kasi as the IHC chief. They argued that Justice Riaz Ahmed Khan, being the most senior judge, should be appointed as IHC chief justice, the sources added.

The commission, however, recommended both the names and forwarded them to the parliamentary committee on appointment of judges to appoint one of them as the IHC chief within two weeks.

The concern is that if the government is thinking of cutting costs through the merger, we might even lose the functionality levels we currently have.
