LAHORE, Sept 26: Three members of a family, including a one-year old boy, were killed after the dilapidated roof of a triple-storey house collapsed near Bibi Amna Masjid, Multan Chungi, on Wednesday, police said.

Hanjarwal police said 35-year-old Babar Ali with his wife, five children and mother had shifted to the rented house from Chuhng on Tuesday.

House owner Altaf Husain, who lives in the front portion of the house and has rented the adjacent three-storey portion, engaged some labourers to repair the roof of the house in the morning. The roof collapsed during repair work, leaving the three members of the family trapped in the rubbles.

Babar’s four children escaped unhurt as they were playing outside the home.

Locals began rescue work besides calling Rescue 1122 and the police.

Rescuers pulled the injured from debris and shifted them to Jinnah Hospital where Babar, his wife Ishrat and son Saif Ali succumbed to their injuries.

The police took Altaf into custody and booked him in a case.

Sadar SP (Operations) Liaqat Ali Malik told Dawn Constable Tanveer Ahmad of Qila Gujjar Singh Police Lines was going on a motorcycle when he found some robbers looting cash and valuables from a store and setting it on fire.

The constable stopped and tried to capture one of the suspects but they attacked him with an axe and fled the scene with the booty.

The SP said the suspects also took away constable’s bike.

Store owner Rana Faheem told the police the robbers took away cash and valuables from his store. He said a guard, Abdul Sattar, went missing after the incident.

The police shifted the body for autopsy and started investigation.

Constable Tanveer was married some three months ago.

SUICIDES: A female student and a PTV employee committed suicide in the city on Wednesday.

Ghalib Market police said 19-year-old Muqadas Jehangir of Ghosia Colony hanged herself after failing to get admission to BCom.

Quoting the family, Gulberg circle ASP Tariq Aziz said she was rushed to Services Hospital where she died.

Qila Gujjar Singh police said Muhammad Asif of Walton Road was found hanged with a booster at the rooftop of the PTV building.

The victim, who was a junior clerk, used his turban to hang himself, what the police claimed, on a matrimonial affair.

The police handed over the bodies to the families after legal formalities.
