KARACHI, Sept 15: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan said on Saturday that the business community would give compensation to the garment factory fire victims besides providing jobs to their heirs and other employees.

He was talking to the media at the Governor’s House after handing over three buses to the Karachi Medical and Dental College for transportation of its students.

He said he had a detailed meeting with representatives of the business community on Friday and they had agreed on a three-point agenda aimed at the welfare of the garment factory victims and their families.

The business community would also give compensation to the heirs of the deceased as one member each from the families of the dead and injured and all those losing jobs would be adjusted in different industries. In future, minimum safety standards shall be complied with by all the industries and their certification by a government agency would be taken into account.

He said that a committee headed by Karachi Commissioner Roshan Ali Shaikh had started working and would submit its recommendations and identify a mechanism for the relief and rehabilitation of the victims of the garment factory in the next couple of days.

In response to a query, the governor said that information about unidentified charred bodies was being gathered and samples for DNA tests had also been taken for this purpose.

The governor said that investigations into the incident were in progress and the final report would come up within the next three days.

He said that a DNA test laboratory would be set up in Karachi with the assistance of the interior ministry and the ministry of ports and shipping.—APP
