LAHORE, Aug 31: The Model Town special magistrate on Friday sent Malik Ishaq of banned Lashkar-i-Jhangvi to Kot Lakhpat Jail on a 14-day judicial remand.

He was arrested from Lahore airport on Thursday on his arrival from Saudi Arabia where he had gone to perform Umra. He was produced before the magistrate amid tight security.

Interestingly, the police did not seek from the court physical remand of Malik Ishaq who was arrested in connection with an FIR 917/12 lodged against him under Section 295-A (Deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the PPC and 3-Amplifier Act with the Nishtar Colony police. Malik was accused of making a speech against Shia sect at Kamahan village on Aug 9.

According to record of Punjab police as well as provincial prosecution department, Ishaq has been involved in more than 40 cases linked to sectarianism and terrorism in which 70 people were killed, a majority of them being Shias.

He was released from Kot Lakhpat Jail on July 14 last year after remaining in there as an under-trial prisoner for 14 years when the Supreme Court (SC) granted him bail in the case involving a terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore. — Staff Reporter
