KARACHI, Aug 14: Two workers of the Sunni Tehrik and an activist of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement (Haqiqi) were among five persons gunned down in the city on Tuesday.

Police said five persons were wounded when assailants riding a motorcycle opened fire on a camp set up by the ST in Baldia Town within the remit of the Saeedabad police station early in the morning. The suspects escaped after the shooting, they added.

The wounded were rushed to the Civil Hospital Karachi, where Aftab Lal and Fahim Qadri died during treatment. Both men were active workers of the Saeedabad sector of the party, a spokesman for the ST said. The other three injured men were admitted for treatment.

Following the incident tension gripped parts of Baldia Town, where intermittent firing was reported, and armed men forced shops and markets to shut at some places in Saeedabad.

The ST spokesman said a camp was set up in connection with Independence Day celebrations in the Saeedabad area which was attacked by terrorists.

He condemned the attack and called for the immediate arrest of the killers.

He said that earlier on Sunday a senior worker of the party was killed in New Karachi. The victim was the sector-in-charge of the Ranchhore Line, and he was going home in New Karachi when targeted.

MQM-H worker

A worker of the MQM-H was gunned down and two others were wounded when assailants shot them in Orangi Town on Tuesday night.

Police said the incident took place in Orangi Town No 4 within the remit of the Pirabad police station.

An officer of the Pirabad police station said Mohammad Naseer, 40, was sitting in front of his home when two suspects riding a motorcycle shot multiple rounds at him. The victim suffered multiple wounds in the head and chest and died on the spot.

“When they witnessed the shooting, children playing nearby started throwing stones at the fleeing suspects who resorted to random firing but left their motorcycle behind and ran away,” the officer said.

Two other persons wounded in the indiscriminate firing were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment. The dead was also shifted by the police to the ASH for medico-legal formalities.

Suspect overpowered

A man sitting at a milk shop in Soldier Bazaar was shot dead by two suspects one of whom was overpowered by people and handed over to the police on Tuesday night.

Police said the incident took place within the remit of the Soldier Bazaar police station, where two suspects on a motorcycle rode to a milk shop where they fired at Javed alias Mangha.

The victim suffered fatal bullet wounds and died on the spot. People present there overpowered one of the suspects while his accomplice escaped.

People roughed up the suspect before handing him over to the police.

The arrested suspect was identified as Amir Pervaiz. A Beretta pistol was seized from him, a police officer said.

The held suspect was a resident of Surjani Town, police said.

Requesting anonymity, an area police officer said Javed was the younger brother of Saleem, an activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, who was nominated in a murder case of an ANP worker sometime back.

Young man

A young man was killed in what police described as a motorbike snatching attempt on Sharea Faisal in the early hours of Tuesday.

Police said the incident took place within the remit of the Ferozabad police station.

Police said Asif Ali, 25, was intercepted by two suspects while he was riding on Sharea Faisal. As they tried to grab his two-wheeler, the young man resisted on which they shot him in the chest and took away the motorbike.

The victim was rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police said a resident of Gulshan-i-Maymar, the young man had gone out with friends for merrymaking.
