LAHORE: Senator Aitzaz Ahsan on Tuesday said that the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) will keep bringing new prime ministers as long as the Supreme Court keeps sending them home, DawnNews reported.

Speaking to media representatives at an Iftar organised for PPP workers in Lahore, Ahsan said that democracy was not facing any kind of danger as a military dictator could not come into power any more.

Referring to contempt of court proceedings against Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, Ahsan said that a ‘middle path’ or a compromise was unlikely since the court could not give leverage in proceedings against a second prime minister.

Ahsan said that in light of the restoration of democracy, the chief justice’s role was crucial, however, this does not mean that the judiciary was not stepping out of line. He added that, according to the constitution, the judiciary had no authority to change laws.

The judiciary should shift it’s focus from political petitioners to the common man’s problems, he said. Criticising politicians, he said that they were also to blame for taking politics to the courts.

"If Nawaz Sharif goes to the courts, a commission is formed. If Imran Khan appear before the judges, immediate notice is taken," complained Aitzaz.
