ISLAMABAD: Chairman Parliament Special Committee on Kashmir Maulana Fazlur Rehman asked India not to stop Pakistani water by constructing dams on Pakistani rivers.

In a statement issued here on Monday, Fazlur said that this step will badly affect our agriculture sector and disrupt the peace of sub-continent.

He said under the Sindh Tas agreement, rivers including Chenab, Ravi and Sindh owned by Pakistan, adding that India can not stop the water of these rivers.

Moreover, he said that India has established several dams on these rivers and now is busy in establishing dams on the Nullah's of these dams. India is also constructing dam on the Nullah of Chenab river which will cause shortage of water in Pakistan.

India is producing electricity in Occupied Kashmir but the people of occupied Kashmir are deprived of electricity, he added.

Maulana Fazlur said that Indian leadership is just claiming of friendship with Pakistan infront of the world but continue to harm the country.

Furthermore, he said that the Kashmir issue is unresolved from the last 65 years and India committing atrocities on the people forcefully.

He urged Indian leadership to take concrete steps for maintaining good relations with Pakistan and avoid mere giving statements.

Not only is India stopping the flow of water to Pakistan, by constructing hydel projects, it is also removing the electricity from the water. As a result Pakistan is getting weak water from which the electricity has been removed. We must go to the UN, the OIC, the ICC and the SPCA to protest this injustice!

I think you should first get your facts right. He already mentioned according to Sind Tas agreement they are not allowed to built dam on Chenab, Ravi and Sindh. So put a stop to non-sense if you can.

Thankfully sane and professionally qualified people in Pakistan state repetedly that Inda has never violated the Indus Wtare Agreement. Mr Fazlur should check his facts from Water Comissioners in Pakistan before making wild allegations.

I think Pakistan has already gone to the World Court on the water issue. Mr. Rehman should wait for the verdict! Rest are all empty rhetoric which will never help solve complex problems. It will only help grow mistrust and harden positions.

If only Pakistan had the vision to construct more dams they would not be in this position. They would also be able to control both water availibility and flooding. The true blame lies with Pakistan's visionless politicians, who have stopped the construction of these dams. Build more dams and resolve your problems; stop asking India to resolve this for you. And if you cannot do it we should just blame ourselves

Gentlemen kasmir is not connected with the national electricity grid of india so no question of using electricity by the rest of india rather whole electricity generated in the valley are consumed in the valley and still there is a power shortage in valley this is why India is building generating plants. pakistan should understand the situation and do accordingly.

They are allowed to build dams of up to a certain capacity on each of these rivers. Please check your facts. All existing and planned dams on every river that flows through India and Pakistan are within treaty limits.

Dams do not stop the flow of the water. Water is captured and released to produce electricity. water is monitered at various heads and if it is continously flowing below the mean average then it calls for a protest. flow of water varies as per the monsoons or rains in the catchment areas. when some leaders dont have anything to say to their followers it makes good sense to raise the india bogey.

But look at the joker's statement, "India is removing the electricity from the water. As a result Pakistan is getting weak water from which the electricity has been removed." What a funny statement. I have seldom laughed so much. Pl understand, water produces electricity by turning turbines, not by shedding electricity contained in it. The worst part is, 16 people have liked it. A Pakistani.

I am a water resource expert from istanbul Turkey I study Indus water budget. All Pakistani people should know that all your other rivers are tributaries of Indus. The head waters of Indus is not from the ice melt from immediate north of Pakistan, nor is that water from heavy rains north of Pakistan, those two are very small contributors for Indus The rain up north is very little over the western foothills of the Himalayas. Most of Indus water slowly but surely comes from the eastern Foothills of Himalaysa from Tibet. That water goes west along mountain valleys galore and finds itself at the head waters of Indus. The heavy rains north of Assam is your source. China has been seriously working on daming that water whic will surely happen soon. Nihat Gozdeki

Ali, Ignore all the venom that is being spewed out. No harm will ever come to Pakistan from India. A weak Pakistan is not in our national interest! We wish Pakistan well! We hope to be friendly neighbours and leave behind a peaceful South Asia for our next generations. Let India Pakistan fight on the sports and economic field, not with armies and missiles! God knows that both countries have paid heavily for all the mistrust and hatred so far! If Germans and French can live as friends in a common union after two world wars, so can we! Beacuse of the uncontrolled population growth in our countries, there will be strain on our shared natural resources but that can be negotiated and handled. These kind of disputes occur even between various states within India and am sure such disputes exist between Punjab and Sindh as well. These need to be sorted out maturely, not by rhetoric and threats. I request mature leaders from Pakistan like Mr. Rehman to act diplomatically in the interest of both countries.

I might be naive but as i see it , the dams that are constructed will store water during the monsoons and release this water on a regular basis (as the aim is to generate electricity throughout the year) So Pakistan will get a controlled flow of water throughout the year( instead of a river in spate during the monsoons) which can be used for irrigation. I think it is a win win situation for both the countries unless of course India is diverting the water into its own area.
