HYDERABAD, Aug 12: PPP Senator Saeed Ghani has said that new power centers emerging in the country are posing threat to the state.

The parliament gave the Constitution but its supremacy was being questioned, he said while talking to journalists at an Iftar dinner hosted by Ahsan Abro, divisional president of the PPP Youth Wing, at the gymkhana here on Sunday.

He said the apex court had the right to interpret constitutional provisions if there was any ambiguity. “As far as the immunity clause is concerned, it contains no ambiguity. It is self- explanatory,” he said, adding that there was no need to claim this.

He accused the apex court of distorting the Constitution while interpreting it in the past. A continuation of such situation would affect the structure of state, he warned. “This has to be avoided,” he said.

He criticised the apex court for its handling of the Arsalan Iftikhar case. Arsalan had used the chief justice’s residence as his office while the registrar of the Supreme Court considered himself as the CJ, he said. Mr Ghani said the apex court could interpret the Constitution but it could not impose a law which it did when it struck down Contempt of Court Act 2012 and resurrected Contempt of Court Ordinance 2003, introduced by Gen (R) Musharraf.

He said people were observing the situation and they were able to differentiate between the right and wrong.
