LONDON, Aug 4: Pakistan’s Liaquat Ali failed to qualify for the next round of the men’s 100metres race after claiming the fourth place in the heat, touching the line in 10.90 seconds at the Olympic Park track on Saturday.

Liaquat, the lone male competitor from Pakistan and a wildcard entry belonging to the Pakistan Army, was 0.45 seconds behind leader Jurgen Themen of Suriname who clocked 10.55 seconds and finished the distance with only 10 microseconds difference to the second qualifier of the heat Fernando Luman of Indonesia who took 10.80seconds.

“I am disappointed with my poor show in the preliminary round as well as for failing to reach my national record of 10.65 seconds,” Liaquat lamented, while saying that he could have qualified for the semi-finals stage had he achieved his national timing.

However, he said that he got good experience at the London Olympics which would help him hone his skills for other events.

Now, female athlete Rabia Ashiq, who will run in the 800m race on Aug 8, is Pakistan’s only hope in athletics.

Two swimmers — Anum Banday and Israr Shah — and shooter Khurram Inam have already made exit from the Olympics after crashing out in the first rounds.
