KATMANDU: Police say a bus veered off a mountain road in western Nepal, killing eight people and injuring 26.

Police official Shyam Bahadur Saud says the bus rolled 100 meters from the gravel road Tuesday morning. Those hurt have been taken to nearby towns for treatment. Nine of the injured are in critical condition.

The bus crashed about 500 kilometres northwest of the capital Katmandu.

Police continue to investigate the crash but say heavy rain had made the road slippery. Bus accidents in mountainous Nepal often are blamed on poor vehicle and road conditions.
