KHAR, June 27: The Mamond tribe of Bajaur Agency on Wednesday deployed hundreds of more volunteers in different areas along the border to prevent possible cross-border attacks by militants.
The residents of the area said that extraordinary arrangements by the elders of tribal laskhar and peace committees were made in the border areas during the last two days.
“More volunteers belonging to different villages have been inducted into the tribal laskhar while patrolling has been extended to the mountainous areas along the border,” Riaz Khan, a local tribesman, told Dawn.
The tribesmen said that several new peace committees were formed in the region. The Mamond Qaumi Laskhar also set up several new posts in different areas near the Pak-Afghan border, they added.
They said that all the tribesmen of the region were cooperating with the peace committees. People were willingly to join the peace committees, they added.
“Now people have realised the importance of peace committees. Being tribesmen, protection of our land from militants is our joint duty,” Sakhi Jan, another tribesman said.
Malik Abdul Aziz Khan, chief of Mamond Qaumi Laskhar, told Dawn that they knew that militants on the other side of the border wanted to disturb peace of the area. He said that recent attacks in Dir districts showed that militants could attack anytime the border areas of the agency.
“But we are fully alert to meet all the challenges. Mamond tribe can defeat militants like it has done in the recent past,” the tribal elder added.
About the arrangements for prevention of the possible attack by militants, he said that all peace committees in the areas were completely alert.
“Peace committees have been reorganised in the region and several news posts have been established in the sensitive areas along the border,” Mr Khan said.
