LAHORE, June 13: In their sixth successful bank heist in the current year, gunmen took away Rs2 million from a bank on COMSATS University premises on Defence Road in Chuhng on Wednesday.

The suspects also took away the gun of a security guard and a couple of cell phones.

Sadar SP (operations) Liaqat Ali Malik told Dawn four young gunmen entered Habib Bank branch after crossing three security layers, held staff and customers at gunpoint and looted cash and other valuables.

He said the bank was operated in a 12x15 room.

The SP said it was quite strange that how the suspects entered the university premises from the main gate guarded with barriers and guards and then dodged two more security checks.

He said one of the bank’s security guards was 60-year old and the other a 40-year-old factory worker.

Quoting witnesses, the SP said two suspects were wearing t-shirt and jeans and the other two were clad in shalwar kameez.

A police investigator said they had obtained CCTV footages of the incident and that the possibility of involvement of students could not be ruled out.

He said the suspects entered the bank while pretending to be students initially.

DIG (Operations) Rai Muhammad Tahir said it appeared during bank robberies that guards were not present at the points where they should have been and bank managers hardly took interest in ensuring proper security possibly as the money was insured.

He said his campaign binding SHOs to check bank security was on and six robberies in six months in a city having over 10 million population was not a big issue.

He said the police had arrested a member of the Pathan gang involved in the first five robberies, adding the sixth strike might be the work of some other gang.

SHOT DEAD: A 22-year-old man succumbed to his wounds at Mayo Hospital early on Wednesday a few hours after he was fatally shot at his doorstep in Santnagar.

Islampura police said Khalid and Nomi allegedly opened fire at Azeem Imtiaz after a matrimonial dispute. Azeem had returned from the UK a few days ago.

The police said further investigation was under way.

FOUND MURDERED: The Factory Area police found the body of a 35-year-old man wrapped in a sack lying along Walton Road on Wednesday.

He was later identified as Zafar Iqbal, of Garhi Shahu.

The police shifted the body for autopsy and launched an investigation.
