ISLAMABAD: Minister for Interior Rehman Malik on Tuesday said President Asif Ali Zardari has successfully and wisely highlighted Pakistan's stance in the Nato's Chicago conference.

Rehman Malik, who visited National Press Club (NPC) here, told journalists there was an impression that President Zardari would announce opening of Nato supply route there, but he talked of national interests, integrity and sovereignty of Pakistan and the feelings of the nation.

“I pay tribute to President Zardari the way he presented case of Pakistan in Chicago Conference,” he said.

The minister said the parliament had given guidelines regarding opening of Nato supplies that a decision in that regard would be taken keeping in view national interests.

Pakistan had halted the Nato supply passing through its territory following a decision by the Defence Committee of the Cabinet after an incursion of the Nato and Isaf troops in its territory on November 26, 2011 in which 24 troops were killed.

He said talks were underway with regard to opening of Nato supply routes. However, the final decision would be in line with the roadmap and the guidelines given by the parliament.

Answering a question, he said, “Besides the US, the Nato has other members as well and we should also keep in mind that Pakistan is part of international community, so, we need to have taken decision keeping our mind open and after a thorough consideration.”

He said a decision based on the recommendations of the parliamentary committee would not only be long lasting but also has the endorsement of people of Pakistan.
