LAHORE, May 14: Islami Jamiat Tulaba’s (IJT’s) activist Awais Aqeel’s funeral was held at the Punjab University, which was attended by a large number of Jamaat-i-Islami and Jamiat activists, students, teachers and political figures.

The Punjab University classes remained suspended and hostels wore a deserted look after the killing of Aqeel, an LLB Part-II student, on Monday.

JI Secretary-General Liaquat Baloch led the funeral prayers of Aqeel, who was allegedly shot dead by a former IJT leader. Later, Aqeel’s body was taken to his native village in Sambrial, Sialkot.

A large number of IJT activists, who took the body to Sambrial, also offered funeral prayers led by JI’s central leader Hafiz Idrees.

Earlier, speaking to IJT activists at the Punjab University, IJT Nazim Zubair Safdar demanded the district administration arrest Aqeel’s killers in two days, otherwise the Jamiat would launch a protest campaign.

He also demanded that Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry take notice of the incident.

He demanded that the names of the nominated suspects in Aqeel’s murder FIR should by put on the Exit Control List.

IJT, PU, Nazim Rai Haq Nawaz announced a three-day mourning in the university and boycotted classes.

He said Quran Khawani for Aqeel will be held at the university on Wednesday (tomorrow).

FIR: The Muslim Town police late on Sunday registered Aqeel’s murder FIR under sections 302, 324, 148 and 149 of the Pakistan Penal Code and 7-Anti-Terror Act against five accused, including Ibrar Wattoo and Imran Tarar.

It is, however, learnt that the police did not visit crime scene nor collected evidence as blood stained chairs and over-toppled chairs were lying as such and various students were visiting the scene.

protest: The Punjab University Academic Staff Association is holding a general body meeting on Tuesday (today) to protest against registration of an FIR against PU College of Information Technology Principal Prof Dr Mansoor Sarwar.

Also, the PU Academic Group has announced boycotting of the ASA general body meeting calling the present elected body as a puppet in the hands of the administration.

In a statement, PU Academic Group secretary Prof Dr Mahr Saeed Akhtar said the present ASA was fanning clashes between teachers and students and damaging the peaceful academic and research environment in the country.
