LONDON, April 29: Schalke 04 thumped woeful Hertha Berlin 4-0 to qualify for next season’s Champions League while Lyon saw off feisty third-tier outsiders Quevilly 1-0 to win the French Cup final on Saturday.
Bundesliga leading scorer Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored twice and Raul was also on target in his last home appearance as Schalke guaranteed third place in the Bundesliga after Borussia Moenchengladbach, the only team who could have overhauled them, were held 0-0 at home by Augsburg on the penultimate day of the season.
Moenchengladbach go into the Champions League preliminary round — a remarkable achievement after escaping relegation by a whisker last season.
Bayer Leverkusen’s ex-Germany striker Stefan Kiessling hit the winner in their 1-0 win over Hanover 96 which means they finish fifth and gives them a Europa League place for next season.
Stuttgart will finish sixth, which means a Europa League qualification play-off.
Forward Lucas Barrios, left on the bench for most of the season, scored a hat-trick as Borussia Dortmund, crowned champions last week, celebrated with a 5-2 win at relegated Kaiserslautern, their 27th league game without defeat.
Champions League finalists Bayern, who are in second-place, beat VfB Stuttgart 2-0.
In France, Lyon collected their first trophy in four years when they beat a spirited Quevilly to win the French Cup for a fifth time with Lisandro Lopez’s goal saving the French giants’ blushes.
The in-form Argentina striker volleyed the ball into an empty net from an Alexandre Lacazette cross in the 28th minute to end Quevilly’s glorious run which had seen the amateurs from Normandy overcome Marseille and Rennes en route to their second Cup final appearance, 105 years after their first.
Lyon, who are fourth in Ligue 1 and lost the League Cup final 1-0 to Olympique Marseille two weeks ago, have secured a spot in next season’s Europa League playoff round.
Over in Spain, Arouna Kone inspired a strong second-half performance from unfancied Levante saw them maintain their push for a place in the Champions League with a 3-1 win over Granada.
Levante, bidding to secure a first venture into European competition next season, climbed into the last Champions League qualification berth in fourth spot with 52 points but the teams around them have a game in hand.
Cash-strapped Racing Santander, cast adrift at the bottom of La Liga, were relegated to the second division after losing 3-0 at Real Sociedad.
Meanwhile, relegation-threatened Sporting Gijon routed Espanyol 3-0, while Mallorca beat Getafe 3-1 as both teams stayed mid-table while Villarreal were held 1-1 at the Madrigal by Osasuna after Raul Garcia struck a spectacular volley for the visitors in the 72nd minute.
In the Italian Serie A, Napoli squandered two more precious points in the race for a Champions League place after Fabio Simplicio grabbed a late equaliser to earn AS Roma a 2-2 draw.
Napoli moved level with Lazio for third place, which carries a spot in Champions League qualifying, but Lazio hold the tie-breaker and have a game in hand.
