Bureij is a Palestinian refugee camp located in the central Gaza Strip. The camp has a population of aprroximately 35,000 with approximately 29,000 registered refugees.

Similar to other camps along the Gaza Strip, the refugees live in densely populated shelters. The camp lacks a proper sewage system, waste disposal system and their main source of water is an Israeli water company.

In this gallery, Palestinian beekeepers inspect hives at an apiary near the central Gaza Strip refugee camp of Bureij. Jihad Abu Shamalah, the Gaza farmer who owns the apiary says his 450 hives produce some 4000 kilos of honey every year.

These honey bees produce commodities such as honey, beeswax, pollen, and royal jelly. – Photos by AFP.
