UNITED NATIONS: Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed veteran Japanese diplomat Yukio Takasu as the new UN management chief and senior UN official Ameerah Haq of Bangladesh to head the department in charge of management and logistics for the world body's far-flung peacekeeping operations.

Takasu, who served as Japan’s ambassador to the US and the UN, is currently Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s special adviser on human security. Haq is currently Ban’s special representative in East Timor and previously served as deputy in UN missions in Sudan and Afghanistan.

UN deputy spokesman Eduardo del Buey also announced the appointment Tuesday of David Muchoki Kanja of Kenya to a new post of assistant secretary-general for the Office of Internal Oversight Services, the UN’s internal watchdog. He is currently director of internal audit for the UN children’s agency, Unicef.

Del Buey said outgoing Undersecretary-General for Management Angela Kane of Germany and Undersecretary-General for Field Support Susana Malcorra of Argentina “have served with distinction and true commitment to the ideals of the United Nations.”

Kane is now the UN high representative for disarmament affairs and Malcorra is secretary-general Ban's chief of staff.
