KARACHI, Jan 25: Funeral prayers for the two activists of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) who had been shot dead in the old city area on Tuesday were held on Wednesday.

The funeral prayers for Muhammad Ali alias Mama, who was working as a legal adviser for the party at the Karachi division level, were held on Mauripur Road.

The funeral prayers were led by Maulana Aurengzeb Farooqui, a key leader of the ASWJ.

The funeral prayers for the other ASWJ worker, Muhammad Noman, were held at the Pathan mosque in Moosa Lane.

Muhammad Noman was a member of the core committee of the party.

The funeral prayers were held after the registration of an FIR in the double murder case in which suspects had been nominated.

Before the burial, ASWJ workers also staged a sit-in on Mauripur Road.

The protesters chanted slogans against the killings and demanded arrest of the persons nominated in the double murder case.

After the funeral prayers, Mohammad Ali was buried in the Okhai Memon graveyard in Mawachh Goth while Muhammad Noman was buried at the Bhorapir graveyard.

Since Wednesday morning, tension prevailed in the old city areas where the two ASWJ workers resided.

Almost all commercial activities in the areas of Baghdadi and Khada Market remained suspended while gunmen fired into the air.

SHO of the Risala police station Abid Hussain Shah said that a case (FIR No 12/2012) under Sections 302 (premeditated murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code was registered on the complaint of a victim’s brother, Shahid, against three persons identified as Tanveer Abbas, Waseem Hyder and Muhammad Mehdi.

He said that the party affiliation of the persons nominated in the FIR were not yet clear.
