LAHORE, Jan 25: The Defence-A police arrested an injured member of a three-strong gang involved in stealing cars after a shootout in W Block of the Defence Housing Authority on Wednesday. The police also seized the car the suspects were travelling in which later turned out be a stolen one.

Defence circle ASP Fida Hussian told Dawn that three policemen signalled a suspected car bearing LRR-9927 number plate to stop at a makeshift picket in Y Block at around 6:15am but it sped along the road.

He said the police were chasing the suspected car when its riders – later found to be three in number – opened fire on their mobile.

The police vehicle sustained four bullets but its driver – Muhammad Azam – did not abandon the pursuit and finally caught the suspected car by ramming his van into back of the black-coloured motorcar.

The police also opened fire on the car riders, injuring two of them. Later, they overpowered one of the injured suspects identified as Muhammad Ishaq, of Sargodha, while the remaining two, including the other injured identified as Ramzan, also of Sargodha, fled after snatching a bike from a citizen at gunpoint. Ishaq was taken to Lahore General Hospital.

The ASP said the police seized the car beside taking into possession two pistols, three magazines and stealing instruments including a key role. He said the car (LRK-2793) bore a fake number plate and had been stolen a few days ago. He said Ishaq later admitted to having stolen more than 10 cars from Defence and Gulberg areas.

Two robbers stopped the family of Muhammad Waseem in Garden Town police limits and deprived them of cash and valuables worth Rs700,000 while as many robbers approached Mubarik Ali in Johar Town police limits and snatched from him Rs25,000 in cash, a cell phone and a laptop after giving him a sound thrashing.

Two robbers stopped the family of Tanveer in Ravi Road police limits and looted from them cash and valuables worth Rs200,000 while four robbers stormed into the house of Riazul Hassan in Hunjarwal police limits and took away cash and valuables worth Rs400,000.

Three robbers entered Noor Muhammad's house in Kot Lakhpat police limits and looted cash and valuables worth Rs300,000.
