
KARACHI: A drug inspector on Monday submitted three complaints in court after a delay of over three years against the management of a multinational pharmaceutical company for allegedly manufacturing substandard drugs.
The drug court admitted the complaints for hearing and issued arrest warrants for the suspects.
Managing director of the company Salman Burney, regulatory affairs manager Shahid Qureshi, head of technical operation Muzaffar Iqbal, director of quality control Zafarullah Khan, official in charge of quality control Ehtesham-ul-Haq and production manager Badi-ur-Rehman were booked for manufacturing substandard capsules.
The three-member drug court headed by Sathi Ishaq issued bailable arrest warrants of Rs500,000 each against the suspects for Jan 20.
According to the prosecution, a drug inspector raided a private hospital in Karachi on Oct 16, 2008 and took samples of some capsules from its medical store and sent them for an analysis. The laboratory reports confirmed that the drugs in question were substandard, it added.
The suspects were booked under the Drugs Act, 1976.
Penalties imposed The special court of federal anti-corruption and emigration on Monday imposed a fine of Rs25,000 each on five men found guilty of using forged documents to travel abroad.
In the case of non-payment of the fine they would undergo two-month imprisonment.
Jahanbaz Khan, Fahimullah, Ahmed Abdul Majeed and Mohammad Tariq were intercepted earlier this year by the immigration staff at Karachi airport before their departure to Saudi Arabia on fake documents.
The fifth man, Abdul Karim, was deported from Dubai a couple of months ago for unlawfully staying there and he was booked under the Emigration Ordinance.
