LONDON: Joey Barton captained Queens Park Rangers on his debut Monday but had to settle for a 0-0 draw against his former club Newcastle despite a promising display by the Premier League newcomers.

Barton, who was released by Newcastle after making critical comments about the club on Twitter, was among five new signings in the QPR team and the hosts had the better chances throughout.

In the first half, Jay Bothroyd volleyed over from six yards and had a header cleared off the line by Newcastle defender Danny Simpson, while Steven Taylor managed to scramble Shaun Wright-Phillips' lob away from goal.

Shaun Derry headed wide from an Adel Taarabt corner in the second half, but Newcastle held on to maintain its unbeaten start to the season and move up to fourth after four games. QPR has four points.
