KARACHI: The Karachi City Cricket Association (KCCA) on Thursday named Shahid Afridi and Danish Kaneria as captains of the city’s two outfits for the Faysal Bank T20 National Cricket Championship, which is being held in Lahore from Sept 24.

Afridi, the former Pakistan limited-overs skipper, will lead Karachi Dolphins, while Kaneria will take charge of the Karachi Zebras side. Test rejects Mohammad Sami and Faisal Iqbal have been appointed vice-captains to Afridi and Kaneria, respectively.

The KCCA also announced provisional squads, finalised by a PCB-appointed selection committee headed by national chief selector Mohsin Khan with Saleem Jaffer, Azam Khan, Tahir Mahmood and Asim Rizvi, after a three-day trial was held at the National Stadium from July 23 to 25. KCCA president Prof Sirajul Islam Bukhari and honorary secretary Prof Ejaz Farooqi oversaw the trials.

The KCCA also said that former Pakistan captain Younis Khan was originally selected for represent Karachi but he later decided to represent Abbottabad in the forthcoming tournament.

The squads will be trimmed further after a brief training camp at the National Stadium on Sept 6.
