PESHAWAR, Aug 7: The Jamaat-i-Islami has accused the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government of preparing bogus voter lists in some areas of the province to rig the next general elections.

“We will bring the issue of bogus voter lists in the notice of Election Commission of Pakistan,” JI provincial deputy chief Mushtaq Ahmad Khan told a press conference here on Sunday.

He said that they received written complaints from Buner and Dir districts about preparing bogus voter lists.

He said that residents of the two districts were worried about preparation of voter lists in an unfair way. “They also presented some lists, tempered with ink-remover,” he said.

JI provincial secretary information Advocate Israrullah, Shamshad Ahmad Kahn and Syed Jamat Ali Shah were also present on the occasion.

Mr Khan alleged that coalition partners in the provincial government, especially Awami National Party, deputed officials of its choice to prepare bogus voter lists.

He said that provincial government also postponed the process of preparing new voter lists in some areas, which showed its evil designs.

“We hope that Supreme Court will take notice of the issue. In the past the apex court has also taken notice of registration of more than 30 million fake votes in the country,” he added.

The JI leader alleged that Pakistan People’s Party rigged the recently held elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Fair and transparent elections would be impossible if the election commission failed to take notice of the bogus voter lists, he added.

Mr Khan also condemned torture against journalists of an Urdu newspaper in Peshawar by police.

“Media is a vital organ to support and strengthen democracy in the country,” he added.
