NEW DELHI: India's most powerful politician, Sonia Gandhi, will undergo surgery overseas, a ruling Congress party spokesman said on Thursday, correcting his earlier statement she had already undergone surgery.

“The statement that I had made earlier was wrong. I have corrected myself. The surgery has not happened yet. It will happen,” Janardan Dwivedi told Reuters.

Gandhi heads the country's ruling Congress party and her son Rahul is seen as the prime minister-in-waiting.
