MARDAN, July 19: A bailiff on Tuesday recovered a missing old man held in illegal custody by officials of Hoti police station for over a week.

Niaz Ali, nephew of the detained person, id Sher Afzal alias Tur Ustad, filed an application with the court of civil judge, Amanullah Khan, seeking recovery of his uncle from illegal custody of the police.

The applicant pointed out that his uncle was arrested on July 11 by the police but was not produced before the court.

The civil judge Amanullah Khan appointed a bailiff who on Tuesday raided the Hoti police station and recovered Sher Afzal from there.

The officials at the police station told this correspondent that Sher Afzal was arrested on July 19 (Tuesday) in a murder case of his daughter-in-law.

They said a person identified as Inayat, hailing from Dargaiy area, registered a murder case of his married daughter, Laila, against her husband, Imtiaz, and father-in-law, Sher Afzal.

They said the Laila’s father alleged his daughter was poisoned to death by her husband, Imtiaz, and his father-in-law, Sher Afzal, a few days back.

The police officials said they were going to produce Sher Afzal before the court today (Wednesday).

Meanwhile, officials of Abdul Wali Khan University, Mardan on Tuesday visited the Buner district and reviewed different sites for the proposed university campus in the city. A press release issued by the university said the officials were led by VC Prof Dr Ihsan Ali.

They met with elders of the area, including ANP president Qarib-ur-Rehman advocate, and other prominent persons.

They discussed the measures regarding the proposed university campus at the city and its long-term benefits for citizens.

Peshawar Bureau adds: A resident of Malam Jabba, Taj Mohammad Khan, has accused Mardan police of arresting his son and taking his car into illegal custody.

Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar press club on Tuesday, he said he had brought his ailing sister in his car (TDZ 5301) to Peshawar for treatment but on return his son, Murad Khan, was arrested by Mardan police for no fault of his.

“When we contacted the concerned SHO of Saddar police station he demanded Rs100,000 for release of my son,” he alleged and added his son had also been kept in habeas corpus in a private building.
