Asian Bank to provide $30m for power plant

ISLAMABAD: The Asian Development Bank is considering extending a $30 million loan for a bagasse-based 80MW co-generation power plant to be built in the private sector near Rahimyar Khan.

The total cost of the project had been estimated at $135 million, sources told Dawn on Saturday.

The plant will be using bagasse as primary alternative fuel and imported coal as secondary fuel and it will be installed close to a sugar mills in Qasba Shirin near Jamaldin Wali.

The plant is considered to be not only economically supportive but also environment friendly.

According to estimates, Pakistan has a potential of generating more than 3,000MW of electricity from its sugarcane by-product through co-generation.

The government has recognised that bagasse-based co-generation power plants can play a significant role in improving the country’s power generation capacity.

In addition to supplying power and steam to the sugar mills, the plant will generate around 51.8MW of electricity which will be provided to the national grid.

Sounds like another fishy deal. Co-gen plants generate heat as a by product, what are they going to do with that?. They should be building CSP plants and incentivising solar power generation.

Its a Good Solution . Seeing this Why not Government Setup a lot of these plants all over the country . Benefits are that there are a lot of Sugar mills and the fuel will be available in the the country . Small projects will not be needing much finance as large ones . And also start coal mining itself also . Which will reduce a large burden on Dollar account . Bio fuel and Bio gas projects should also be started . which will provide fuel for cars and gas and fertilizer too.

Although there are many solutions for overcoming the power shortages but it requires the better management. As it has also been emphasized by the Robe Steele, ISO Secretary General(2011) has mentioned that the issue of energy has no longer been related to the technical side but to the management side and need to be addressed immediately. So our goverment needs a better management.

The heat is utilized to generate steam for sugar making process. We are an energy deficient country - any and all forms of sustainable generation should be encouraged.
