KARACHI, Nov 14: Pakistan Army reigned supreme when they clinched the Pakistan ranking boxing tournament with their pugilists bagging five titles here Wednesday.

Nauman Karim, Faisal Karim, Kashif Mumtaz, Andaleeb Khan, and Ahmad Ali Khan, all internationals from Army, won their bouts with ease.

Light-flyweight Nauman, also a national camp trainee, proved too powerful for his compatriot Syed Hassan who lost 3-0.

Another national camp probable, SAF Games bronze medallist lightweight Faisal routed Karachi Port Trust (KPT)’s Zahid Hussain 3-0.

Welterweight Kashif also chalked up a 3-0 victory over Navy’s Abdul Hakeem. Middleweight Ahmad Ali, another camp trainee, outpunched his department’s Muzamil 3-0, while Army’s light-middleweight Andaleeb was awarded a walkover against Samar of Pakistan Air Force (PAF).

Olympian Asghar Ali Shah, a Commonwealth Games silver medallist, who had switched over from lightweight to light-welterweight, forced the Navy and Army boxers to remain out of the ring as they did not come out to face him despite being present on the venue.

KPT’s Asghar, who grabbed his first international gold last year at the Green Hill Cup in Karachi, finally clinched the title without trading a single punch with his opponent after a walkover against Army’s Imran Haider.

Earlier on Tuesday Navy’s Mohammad Azam had avoided Asghar in the semifinal.

KPT, who finished as the runners-up with three titles, snatched flyweight title when Obaidullah Qambrani staved off a spirited challenge before winning 2-1 against Army’s Pervez Akhtar.

International bantamweight Meherullah of KPT blanked out his team-mate Sohail Ahmad 3-0.

Wapda’s featherweight Haider Ali, another Olympian to fight on the concluding day of the eight-team contest, was declared the best boxer of the tournament, after he thrashed Army’s Mohammad Sheraz 3-0.

Wapda, who grabbed two titles to become the second runners-up, won the heavyweight bout that saw Asian Games silver medallist Muzafar Iqbal outboxing Army’s Mohammad Shaikh 3-0.

Light-heavyweight Mohammad Sharif defeated PAF’s Shafiq 3-0 to claim the solitary title for the KESC to help his department settle for the fourth position.
