MUZAFFARABAD, June 27: AJK Chief Election Commissioner Khawaja Mohammad Saeed annulled on Monday elections in two constituencies on reports of returning officers but his office announced unofficial results of 34 of the 35 constituencies.

Of the 35 constituencies, result of LA 16, Bagh IV (Haveli), was withheld after reports of alleged rigging received from at least six polling stations.

EC spokesman Tariq Mahmood Butt told Dawn that in Samahni and Abbaspur the polling staff were roughed up and threatened with dire consequences and election material along with result sheets were snatched and torched by some elements.

Polling could not take place in dozens of stations in the two constituencies because of indiscriminate firing, he said.

A PML-N supporter was killed in Samahni on Sunday.

Polling in LA 37, Valley-II, a Kashmiri refugees' constituency in Lahore, was cancelled for similar reasons.

According to unofficial results, the PPP has bagged 19 seats, 17 in AJK and two in Pakistan.

The PML-N has emerged as the second largest party with nine seats, five in AJK and four in Pakistan. The party's chief organiser Raja Farooq Haider has won two seats.

The ruling Muslim Conference has been able to clinch only four seats, all in AJK.

Two independent candidates have won in the Kashmiri refugee constituencies in Pakistan.

Of the six constituencies where elections are to be held four are in Pakistan.

Mr Butt said that polling in Abbaspur would be held on July 18 while the polling date for Samahni and Lahore constituencies was likely to be announced on Tuesday.

About the two constituencies in Karachi, where postponement of polls has cost the PPP its alliance with the MQM, he said: “Elections depend on normalisation of the law and order situation there.”

He said polling in LA 41, Valley VI, located in Khyber Pakhtunkhawa, would be held after resolution of the issue of voter lists.
