UMERKOT, June 27: A woman was allegedly tortured and then burnt to death by her in-laws in Amarhar village, 40 kilometres from here on Monday.

The woman Moomal’s brother Sarwan Meghwar of Gadhrio village said his sister was married to one Amolakh six years ago who lived in Amarhar village but she stayed at her parents’ home most of the time because her husband used to maltreat her.

A day before, a message was conveyed to her that a money order of subsistence allowance under the Benazir Income Support Programme had arrived at her husband’s home in Amarhar village, Mr Sarwan told journalists.

When she went there to collect the money order, she was brutally tortured by her in-laws till she fell unconscious in the kitchen, he said, adding that they set her ablaze to make it appear she had committed suicide.

Police have taken Amolakh and his father Gordhan into custody and shifted the charred body to hospital for autopsy.—Correspondent
