BRISTOL: Sri Lanka thrashed England by nine wickets in a one-off Twenty20 on Saturday, ruining Stuart Broad's debut as captain and showing the tourists remain a force in limited over games.

Sri Lanka finished on 137-1, comfortably reaching England's 136-9 with almost three overs to spare at the County Ground after choosing to field.

Chasing revenge for its 1-0 defeat in the recent three-test series, Sri Lanka never looked threatened. Mahela Jayawardene scored 72 not out and shared a 97-run partnership with Kumar Sangakkara, who was undefeated on 43.

Sanath Jayasuriya, a controversial selection at age 41, was England's only wicket, caught by Kevin Pietersen off Jade Dernbach for eight.

Twenty20 world champion England earlier struggled against the 2011 World Cup finalists, being reduced to 12-2 after losing the early wickets of Michael Lumb and Craig Kieswetter.

Pietersen hit 41 and Eoin Morgan scored 47 to move England to 101-3 before its middle-order collapsed.

Lasith Malinga ended with 2-15 off four overs, while Suranga Lakmal and Sanath Jayasuriya also took two wickets each.

England was captained for the first time by allrounder Broad, who finished with 0-29 off 3.2 overs and was run out for 0 after coming in for the penultimate over of England's innings.

Thilan Kandamby also made his debut as skipper for Sri Lanka. England and Sri Lanka meet in five one-day internationals, starting Tuesday.
