SUKKUR, May 30: A civil court remanded on Monday a nurse, a midwife and a man in police custody for a week in a case of forced abortion.

The complainant, Ms Perween, had lodged an FIR, alleging that her cousin Mauj Ali forcibly took her to the nurse Shoukat Begum in Mirpur Mathelo on Sunday where the midwife Mukhtiaran Shaikh terminated her five-month pregnancy.

Perween told the police that she had no contact with her family since her marriage. However a fortnight ago, the relations between her and her parents were revived after they assured her that they had accepted her marriage.

During a visit to her parents' house, she said, Mauj Ali forcibly took her to the house of the nurse where the abortion was performed against her will.

She said that her family punished her for choosing husband of her choice without their consent. Dawn

Investigation Officer at Mirpur Mathelo police station, Ali Hassan Sawand, told that police produced the accused women in the court of civil judge of Daharki who remanded them in police custody.

Bu they were sent to women's jail in the Central Jail-II Sukkur because, according to police, there were no separate lock-ups for female accused in Sukkur and Ghotki districts.

Ms Perween was sent to Darul Aman and the accused Mauj Ali was sent to Mirpur Mathelo police station.

Sukkur has a women police station but it is only a complaint centre and has no lock-up, according to police.

SHO Bahar Ali Kerio said that raids were being conducted to arrest Ms Perween's father Ali Mohammad Mahar and her mother Khandul who were also nominated in the FIR. However, according to reports, Ali Mohammad and Khandul had been arrested.
