BANGALORE: Chris Gayle's breezy cameo propelled Royal Challengers Bangalore into the Indian Premier League playoffs after a four-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders in a rain-hit match on Saturday.

Chasing 102 to win from 13 overs under the Duckworth-Lewis method, hard-hitting left-hander Gayle plundered 38 runs off just 12 balls that included two sixes and six hits to the fence at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Gayle is the tournament's highest scorer with 436 runa at an average of 87.2, despite joining Bangalore after they had played their first five matches.

Bangalore have won seven successive matches and top the IPL with 17. Kolkata are fourth on 14 points.

In Mumbai, bottom-placed Deccan Chargers upset the hosts with a 10-run win at the Wankhede Stadium.

Set a target of 136, Sachin Tendulkar hit 37 for Mumbai but got little support.
