SWABI, April 9: Sardar Hussain Babak, provincial Education Minister, said on Saturday that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government would promote 1,425 teachers of different cadres to the post of senior English teacher (SET) under the new service structure introduced a few months back. Talking to Dawn he said that they had planned to implement the newly adopted service structure very soon and he had already ordered the executive district officers (EDOs) and elementary and secondary education departments to finalise the seniority list of the certified teachers (CTs), physical education teachers (PETs), drawing masters (DMs) and others.

He said the promotion of teachers would help overcome over the shortage of teachers in the public sector educational institutions. “Under the new service structure even primary school teachers (PSTs) could be promoted as higher as to the headmaster level posts but seniority would be maintained.”

Mr Babak said before the introduction of the new service structure appointments of the SETs were made through the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Public Service Commission but now 50 per cent of the appointments would be made by the government on the basis of seniority while 50 per cent would be done by the commission.

BOOK FAIR: An ‘Islamic Book Fair’ was held at the community centre of the Right Bank Colony of the Tarbela Dam Power House on Saturday. The fair was organised by Pakistan Tehrik-i-Mehnat (PTM).

Khalid Khan, district president of the PTM, told this correspondent that they displayed about 6,000 books in the fair and employees of the residential colonies of the Tarbela Dam, Ghazi Barotha and Topi tehsil visited the fair and purchased Islamic books.

He said the specialty of the fair was that only Islamic books of different categories and writers were displayed. He said the tafseer (explanation) of the Holy Quran written by different distinguished Muslim scholars were also displayed.

He said people took great interest in the tafseer and purchased all the books. “We ran short of the book and a special order was placed for purchasing more tafseer,” he said.

The discount margin on books ranged from Rs40 to Rs50,” he said, adding, “We were assisted by PTM Lahore in holding the fair.”
