This is apropos of the column, 'The future trends' by Moeed Yusuf (Jan 10). In his article he recommends the government introduce two subjects: civic education and peace education, compulsory at all levels.

He points out that it tends to create minds much more conscious of the rights of the state and the state's responsibility while peace education emphasises the basic need for tolerance and peaceful conflict resolution as basis of healthy existence.

In my view, the existing compulsory subjects of Pakistan Studies and Islamiat fulfill the need and are very useful in achieving the objectives mentioned by the columnist.

Both subjects have the capacity to overcome the problems mentioned by the columnist. The need of the time is that the contents of both the subjects should be revised and given proper weightage in our institutions.

The subjects should be taught by specialists.
