KARACHI, Jan 7: An activist of the Shabab-i-Milli — a youth wing of the Jamaat-i-Islami — was gunned down in Surjani Town in the early hours of Friday, police and party sources said.

The police added that 28-year-old Irfan was returning home from his paan shop when he was targeted in Sector 7-A of Surjani Town.

“Both his residence and shop are situated in the same sector,” said an official at the Surjani Town police station. He added that the man was returning home when two men riding a motorbike intercepted him.

“One of them opened fire on Irfan before both fled,” the official said, adding that the victim sustained two bullets and died on the spot.

The police said that the incident was not a result of any mugging attempt, because the motorcyclists did not deprive the victim of his cellphone and other valuables.

While the police remained unable to trace the people and motive behind the killing, JI’s youth wing Shabab-i-Milli claimed that the victim was their party worker and targeted only for his political association.

“We have lost some four workers in a year or so. Despite repeated requests, the area police and the authorities concerned have not paid heed to our concerns,” said a party spokesman.

Body found A 55-year-old labourer was found shot dead in Shershah on Friday.

Some passers-by spotted the body lying along Lyari Expressway near Shershah and informed the area police. “The body was shifted to the Civil Hospital for medico-legal formalities,” said an official at the Shershah police station.

“The victim, later identified as Sultan Mohammad, was hit by two bullets fired from a very close range. Besides, a few bruises seen on the face and other parts of the body indicate that he was tortured before being killed,” the police official said.

The victim worked as a labourer in one of the warehouses of the scrap market and resided in the same facility. “In fact, he hailed from Bajaur Agency and settled here many years ago,” the official said.

He added that the victim’s family resided in their native village.

“We are waiting for his family members, who are expected to arrive, before registering an FIR,” the official said, suspecting some personal enmity as a motive behind the murder.
