PESHAWAR: National champions Wapda ended their 18-year wait for a National Games gold, beating PAF 1-0 in a tight final at the Jinnah Stadium, Islamabad.
The lone goal of the match was scored by captain Arif Mehmood after he was brought down in the PAF box in the 62nd minute. Mehmood, the leading scorer in the Pakistan Premier Football League (PPFL) for the last several years, remained cool and composed to score.
The win capped a wonderful year for Wapda who only a few weeks ago gained an insurmountable lead in the PPFL and have mathematically been declared champions even with a few games still to be played in the event.
Wapda, eighth times national champions, last won the National Games at Minto Park in 1992.
Meanwhile, in the bronze medal match five times National Games gold medallists and holders Army, lost to Pakistan Navy 2-4 on penalties after the score remained 0-0 at full time.
Army fielded an under strength line up as many of their players are still competing in PPFL.
