THE law enforcement agencies have ignored the directives of the former Peshawar commissioner to set up joint checkpoints and make use of close circuit cameras at boundary of the provincial capital with the tribal areas to check movements of criminals and militants for controlling crimes, especially kidnapping for ransom. PESHAWAR, Nov 13: Six persons, including a woman and a girl, were injured when suspected militants attacked a pro-government tribesman with hand grenades at Patang Chowk on Ring Road here on Saturday.

The tribesman, Yousuf Qandhari, present in his real estate office escaped the attempt on his life miraculously. However, six persons received injuries in the attack. The injured were identified as Rubina Bibi, 24, Marwat, 12, Samiullah Khan, 15, Sartaj, 14, Zubair, 12, and Usman, 10.

They were taken to Lady Reading Hospital by staffers of Rescue 1122 where most of them were described in stable condition. An official of Faqirabad police station said that Mr Qandhari belonged to Mohmand Agency. He supported political administration against militants, he said.

In his report to police, the tribesman said that four persons riding motorbikes came in front of his office, opened fire with pistols and then hurled hand grenades at him but he escaped.

“As the grenade landed, I hurriedly threw it outside of the office,” he claimed and added that he could not identity the attackers. Mr Qandhari said that he had no enmity with anyone. The attackers might be Taliban, he added.

The official said that a case against unidentified persons had been registered at the police station and security at the entry points had been beefed up to arrest the accused.
