LAYYAH, Aug 19: Per day supply of milk to various dairies has fallen by 60,000 litres because of displacement of milk producing animals from the flood-hit areas over the last 18 days, says a livestock official.

The flash flood, which ravaged the 1,200 square kilometre riverine area of Layyah district, also displaced around 500,000 animals from this area, says District Livestock Officer Dr AD Khosa.

Layyah is a major milk producing district in Punjab and its worst affected 14 union councils had around 70,000 animals, which were producing 250,000 litres of milk every day.

Companies like Nestle, Highnoon and Halla buy milk from the area, which also meets the needs of Karor Lal Esan, Layyah city, Jaman Shah, Kot Sultan and Paharpur.
