PESHAWAR, June 12: NWFP Governor Iftikhar Hussain Shah has said that the establishment of public safety commissions is at the final stage and will be announced shortly.

He stated this while presiding over a high-level meeting at the Governor’s House here on Monday night.

It was attended by Chief Secretary Shakil Durrani, Home Secretary Javed Iqbal, Finance Secretary Wajid Rana, IGP Saeed Khan, Peshawar Capital City   Police Chief Khursheed Alam, DIG Masood Paracha and other senior official of the police department.

The federal government on Aug 12, 2001, through an amendment in the Police Act, had made the formation of district and capital city district public safety commissions mandatory for the provincial governments. But till date it failed in getting established the required bodies.

Frontier government, at the meeting, formed a committee to prepare a report on the modernization of police department investigation wing. The provincial home department secretary will head the committee.

The meeting suggested that the wing should not be organised in accordance with the prevailing crime ratio in the districts. They also urged to develop separate training syllabus and provide modern facilities at the Police Training Collage, Hangu.

The governor took keen interest in the separation as well as development of the investigation wing, saying that the government was ready to provide all the required facilities and resources for its modernisation.

The prosecution wing, he urged, should also be strengthened and developed accordingly. Referring to another point, the governor also agreed not only to reconstruct the Services and Police Hospital, but also to equip it with specialised facilities.
