ISLAMABAD, March 11: The Pakistan Navy on Friday set up a board of inquiry to probe into a fire which broke out on Pakistan Navy oil tanker ‘PNS Moawin’ at the PN dockyard in Karachi on Thursday.

The fire which engulfed the logistic ship when it was undergoing routine maintenance and cleaning work killed six people on the spot and injured about 100. Two of the injured died later, raising the toll to eight.

Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Shahid Karimullah visited the PNS Shifa in Karachi on Thursday and inquired about the health of the personnel injured in the fire.

He thanked the government and private organizations who, despite pressing commitments, offered voluntary assistance and services to the Pakistan Navy in handling the emergency.

The assistance was offered by Edhi, Sindh Trust, Patel Hospital, Civil Hospital, Pakistan Army, Pakistan Air Force and the Sindh government.

The Namaz-i-Janaza of officers and sailors killed in the fire was offered on Friday morning at the PNS Shifa ground.

The Vice Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Ahsan Saleem Hayat, also visited the PNS Shifa on Friday and inquired about their health. —APP/PPI
