SHEIKHUPURA, Aug 3: Flooded Nullah Dek inundated more than 30 villages on Tuesday and rendered 40,000 people homeless. Flowing from India, the flooded nullah damaged paddy crop spreading over 35,000 acres of land.

The affected villages were situated along Sialkot, Gujranwala and Sheikupura districts, especially Narang Mandi and many adjoining mauzas.

Reports said the water level had reached from three to four feet while in low-lying areas, it was four to five feet forcing the people stay at their roof tops. The mostly hit villages are Jabboki, Fatehpur, Kotli Momin, Bhagatpura, Mangat, Maloher, Shameer, Dholan, Sohawa, Gonaoor, Nathanwali, Tamooli, Khori, Band Bajwa and other adjoining localities.

People are trying to shift to safe places on self-help basis. On the directions of district Nazim Chaudhry Tawakkalullah Virk and flood control cell in-charge Naseer Ahmad, the irrigation, district administration, police, health, revenue and civil defence officials have started rescue operation. Shortage of food items and animal fodder was also reported in certain areas.
