ISLAMABAD, April 18: The Supreme Court Bar Association has rejected what it calls formalisation of the military's role in politics and vowed to continue to resist the militarisation of Pakistani politics.

The Supreme Court Bar Associations' executive committee meeting in a resolution, which was passed unanimously, said that the establishment of National Security Council would further destabilise the national politics.

Chaudhry Mohammad Ikram, vice-president of the SCBA's Punjab chapter briefed journalists about the resolutions adopted during the meeting which was held on Saturday, saying the SCBA held that formalisation of the military's role in politics was in violation of constitution and judgments of the Supreme Court.

"SCBA is of the considered view that the armed forces had played no role in the creation of Pakistan, and it was only the masses who created Pakistan." The SCBA said that the involvement of the military officers in politics, would not only ruin the institutions they are heading, but would also further spoil the country's political system.

The SCBA meeting also opposed the sending of troops to Iraq. The meeting resolved that if Pakistan sent its troops to Iraq to help the invading US and British forces, Pakistan's image in the Muslim world be severely damaged. "Pakistan's forces are for (meant for) the protection of its own territory and are not mercenary forces," the meeting said.

The SCBA meeting, presided over by Akram Zubairi, vice- president of the SCBA, Sindh, was also attended by Latif Yousafzai, Vice President SCBA, NWFP, Mohammad Ikram Chaudhry, SCBA, Punjab, Zaman Qureshi, Secretary SCBA, Finance Secretary SCBAZulifkar Ahmad Bhutta, Amin Javed, member executive council, Roshan Ara, Shamsa Kanwal, and Dil Mohammad Tarar.
