ISLAMABAD, Jan 12: Saadia Imam and Sohail Asghar won the best actress and actor awards for the year 2002 at a colourful 12th PTV Awards show organized to mark 40 years of Pakistan Television.

The grand ceremony also showcased dance-cum-musical performances on the theme of popular folk lores like Saiful Malook, Sohni Mahiwal, Sassi Punno and Darbaish Begum reflecting the message of love and peace.

The ceremony held at the Convention Centre was telecast live. The PTV's achievements were catagorized into four periods: the decade of challenges (1964 to 1974), decade of dedication (1974 to 1984), decade of development (1984 to 1994) and the decade of professionalism (1994 to 2004).

Popular television stars Naveed Shahzad, Shoaib Hashmi, Anwar Maqsood and Abid Ali briefly touched upon the achievements of television during that particular era.

The ceremony started late and the audience were made to sit for about six long hours through the show. They were asked to reach the venue at 7:30pm while the ceremony started at 9:15pm.

Though the arrangements inside the hall were well managed, no body was seen outside to guide the public. A large number of people were also denied entry as they had brought their kids along.

Saadia Imam and Sohail Asghar were given awards for their performance in drama serial 'Umeed' and 'Chaudwin Raat', respectively. Governor Punjab Lt-Gen Khalid Maqbool (retired) presented the awards to both artists.

Similarly, Qazi Wajid, Mumtaz Kanwal and Seemi Raheel were declared best supporting actor and actresses for their performance in 'Ghutan' and 'Dasth-i-Tanhai'.

Special awards were also given to Mahmood Rana, manager engineering Lahore for indigenously developing digital OB Van for PTV, Mohammad Ali and Sher Ali for Qawali and Zil-i-Huma and Tarranum Naz for melody.

Ali Rizvi was adjudged as the best producer (drama serial) 'Dard Ka Fasle in 2002,' Qasim Pasha as best producer (drama serial/independent) 'Umeed', former Senator Taj Haider for best playwright serial 'Dard ka Fasle', Shakeel Adnan best cameraman outdoor, Naseem Iqbal Khan best cameraman studio, Shamoon Hashmi best compare, Samina Waqar and Ayesha Qaiser best newscaster Urdu and English, respectively.

Zulfikar Ali Shah was adjudged best producer (news), Mohammad Yunus Khan best cameraman (news), Mujahid Hussain best music composer, Shahida Minni best singer, Sabir Zafar best lyricist, Afraz Ali Syed best set designer, Shoaib Saleem for technical excellence (video), Ibrar Ahmed for technical excellence (audio), Shaiq Masood best producer (magazine), Zafar Iqbal Bangash, best producer (current affairs), Iqbal Ahmed, best producer (children programmes), Mansha Nath best producer (sports), Ayub Khawar producer (shows) and Qari Najam Mustafa best Qari.

Tina Sani, Salamat Ali, Zil-i-Huma, Shahida Minni, Ahmed Jehanzeb, Asif Mehndi, Fakhir, Jawad Ahmed, Ibrarul Haq, Zohaib Hassan, Fuzon, Fariha Pervez, Humaira Channa and Saira Naseem enthralled the audience by singing oldies of Iqbal Banno, Mehdi Hassan, Farida Khanum, Roona Laila and Ahmad Rushdi.

"Uncle Sargam" and "Masi Musibtain" also presented skits in addition to Salman Shahid, Irfan Khosat and Salima Hashmi. Apart from Punjab governor, Governor Sindh Ishratul Ibad, Governor NWFP Lt-Gen Iftikhar Hussain Shah, Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayat, Communications Minister Ahmed Ali, Petroleum Minister Noraiz Shakoor, Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Minister of State for Culture Rais Munir, Lt-Gen Hamid Javed, Secretary Information and Chairman PTV Anwar Mahmood and Managing Director PTV Akhtar Waqar Azeem also attended the function.
