Jirga held in Kandhkot despite ban

SUKKUR/JACOBABAD, Nov 27: A jirga, despite a ban imposed by the Sindh High Court on holding jirgas, was held in Kandhkot on Sunday to resolve years old bloody dispute between two groups.

The jirga said to be the biggest in history of Sindh was held under official umbrella in the play ground of the Kandhkot Degree College.

Sardar Khadim Hussain Jatoi, MNA Dr Ibrahim Jatoi and provincial minister Mir Manzoor Panhwar presided over the jirga.

Sardar Tegho Khan Teghani, MPA Abid Sundrani, Sardar Sher Khan Bijarani, Moulvi Asadullah Mahar, Ghulam Qadir Panhyar, Nasrullah Bijarani, Kashmore DPO Shahab Mazhar Bhalli, and OSD to Sindh Chief Minister Sarwar Sarki and thousands of people attended the proceedings.

The jirga after hearing to grieving groups announced its verdict.

According to the verdict, the Teghani side was fined Rs9.6millions for killing 19 people from the Ogahi side and injuring several others.

A fine of Rs1 million was imposed upon the Teghani group for registering an FIR against a Sardar, MPA Abid Sundrani, and his brother Rashid Sundrani.

The Ogahis were fined Rs8.3 millions for killing 15 Teghanis and injuring many others.

The jirga also fined Rs2 millions over Ogahis for firing upon the house of another Sardar, Tegho Khan Teghani, and taking away his buffaloes.

Sardar Abid Sundrani and Sardar Tegho Khan Teghani announced remittance of the amount of fine imposed upon the either group for registering an FIR against them.

Both the groups would pay the amount of fine in two equal instalments.

It may be mentioned here that the fine for killing a woman was Rs800,000 while for killing man was Rs400,000.

The Ameens also decided that any group resorting to aggression against the other in future would be fined Rs1 million.

Sardars of both the sides embraced each other and vowed to do away with the years old enmity.

The jirga started in the morning and its verdict was announced at about 11:10pm after the proceedings of more than 14 hours.

Tight security arrangements were made around the venue of the jirga to avert any untoward incident and all participants were checked thoroughly before allowing them to enter the venue.

It may be mentioned that the Ogahi-Teghani clashes started in 1997 over buffalo rustling and 40 people were killed from the either side.
