RAWALPINDI: Begum Nusrat Bhutto has made a Declaration assuring all appropriate measures to abolish prejudicial practices, customs and usages which are discriminatory against women and to ensure adequate legal protection for safeguarding the rights of women. The “Declaration on the Rights of Women in Pakistan” comprising 19 articles has been made on the culmination on Sunday [Oct 24] of the nationwide celebrations of Women’s Week aimed at awakening mass awareness of the rights given by Islam and Constitution of Pakistan.
[As per a related report from Lahore,] Mr. Yahya Bakhtiar, Attorney General of Pakistan and Chairman Pakistani Women’s Rights Committee, has vehemently refuted the allegation that the Committee’s report contained any proposal with regard to grant to women the right to divorce their husbands.
Addressing a seminar … he stated that the Committee has only suggested that the right of ‘Khula’ granted to women in Islam should be legally recognised. About the … right of ‘Khula’, he added, there may be difference of opinion but the Government has not taken any decision … as yet. It … would accept that interpretation of ‘Khula’ which is in accordance with … Islamic Law.
