KARACHI: Senior Pakistan Peoples Party leader Nisar Khuhro on Friday termed any debate over the proposed 28th Amendment to the Constitution premature, saying the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz lacked the two-thirds majority required in parliament to amend the Constitution.
Addressing a press conference at the Sindh Assembly’s committee room, he said that the governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) was not intended to continue for a prolonged period and could be withdrawn if political parties agreed on a joint action plan against terrorism.
Mr Khuhro said that talk of the 28th Amendment was premature as even if the federal government brought its other allies on board, it would still not have a two-thirds majority.
“Therefore, a debate on the 28th Amendment would weaken the country’s future.”
Responding to a question about governor’s rule in KP, the PPP leader said that the issue in the province was not new but had persisted for many years and that, under the Constitution, governor’s rule could be imposed in a province if the law and order situation deteriorated beyond acceptable limits.
He said that the president had signed the summary for imposing governor’s rule in KP on the approval of the federal cabinet and on the advice of the prime minister. However, governor’s rule in
KP was not intended to remain in force for a long period.
He said that the government had not closed the doors for negotiations with political parties regarding the situation in KP. However, the former chief minister
of KP had not expressed willingness to confront terrorists. If political parties agreed on an action plan against terrorism, then governor’s rule in KP could be ended, he said.
On the occasion, Aiman Saleem, daughter of former cricketer Saleem Yousuf, also announced joining the PPP.
